Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the transformation and reconfiguration of social relations in post-socialist Albanian villages. Theoretical interpretation is achieved through an integration of anthropological perspectives on exchange [gift-circulation], framed within liminal contexts and phases. The central theoretical argument posits that social change and transformation are most comprehensively understood when the processes of ‘giving and receiving’ - both as social practices and as cultural meanings - are juxtaposed with opposing social practices such as appropriation, accumulation, and occupation. The analysis addresses the dynamics of exchange, non-exchange and anti-exchange among village members themselves and in their relationships with the state and nature. The ethnographic data underpinning this study were primarily gathered through the research project The Ethnographic Atlas of the Village in Today Albania, conducted during the period 2020–2022.
