Summary/Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the use of the word ἠϊών in Greek literature from Homer to Byzantine time. The author reviews the many meanings o f the word in various contexts and sets out the most important meaning of this in relation to low-lying seacoasts, sandbanks and peninsulas of the northern Black Sea.
