Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the method of reporting of the most significant monthly newspaper Monthly Mercury on the situation in the Ottoman Empire, as well as on the relations of the Porte towards its neighbours. Th e emphasize was placed on the creation of the opposition against the current sultan Ahmed III and on the way it was interpreted by the British press. Th e problem of regulating relations with Russia and Poland turned out to be of the greatest importance to the Porte in the given period. In an effort to give credible argument to its reporting, the Monthly Mercury attempted to show environment in the Ottoman Empire in an appropriate light, emphasizing the measures taken by the government in order to strengthen its position. This primarily relates to the fiscal measures taken during the time of Damad Ali Pasha as the Grand Vizier, as well as to his work on the suppression of any opposition within the state. It can be concluded from reporting concept of the Monthly Mercury that the bases for its information were the reports of a British ambassador in the Ottoman Empire - Robert Sutton, but that diplomatic sources used had been delivered through other channels, primarily via Vienna. From the point of view of the degree of interest of British public opinion, Sutton’s reporting on the regulation of Ottoman-Russian relations was of primary importance. It occupied a central place in the reports in 1713. This interest was surpassed by the awareness for the issue of the Porte’s attitude towards Venice, especially from the beginning of 1714 when the measures the armament of the fleet was undertaken.
