Summary/Abstract: In time of legate L. Aurelius Gallus (201-204? AD), on the reverse of some monetary issues from Nikopolis ad Istrum (Lower Moesia), struck in the name of the emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla, an imperial triumphal procession appears illustrated. The monetary image shows a quadriga (decorated with a Nike/Victoria), wearing two characters, in front of it are sketched two other secondary characters. Above the horses and the two secondary characters is illustrated a platform on which is a trophy with two captives at the base. The entire triumphal procession is led by Virtus, personification of the imperial virtues, who carries a banner (vexillum) and a long dagger (parazonium) or erect phallus. What is the significance of this monetary type? How did his imagery evolve at Nikopolis ad Istrum? What are the origins and model of this Roman propaganda imagery? Are some questions related to this monetary theme from Nikopolis ad Istrum to which we will try to find an answer in our article.
