Summary/Abstract: This article explores the construction of identity in German academic writing, focusing on the unique challenges faced by both native and non-native speakers within German-speaking academic communities. The study begins by examining the so-called “I-ban” in German scholarly texts, highlighting the cultural emphasis on objectivity and formality. However, recent studies suggest a gradual shift towards more personalized expressions of identity. The discussion then expands to “Wissenschaftssprache,” the specialized language of German academic writing, which demands strict adherence to linguistic conventions. The increasing influence of English as the global academic lingua franca adds another layer of complexity, reshaping the dynamics of academic communication and identity formation. Finally, the article addresses the specific difficulties encountered by students as they navigate between expectations of German academic writing and the conditions under which they are instructed. By analyzing these factors, the article attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape of identity in German academic writing and to offer insights into the broader implications for the academic community.
