The Use of Chunks in German Academic Papers

Summary/Abstract: The current analysis, takes the shape of a case study of two Romanian students who study German as a foreign language, and focuses on certain particularities regarding the use of chunks in German academic writing. Three research questions are formulated. How do the selected students use chunks in their German academic texts? How do chunks modify in time? Are there any differences between the two students in terms of chunk usage? In order to answer these questions, a list of most frequent chunks is created and then compared with lists of most frequent chunks used by students with German as their second language and by native speakers of German. Then the most used chunks by each student are analysed and compared, in order to observe any possible differences between the students but also to observe whether changes appear as the students’ linguistic level increases.
