Summary/Abstract: Łukasz Wróbel’s work on Józef Jerzy Hylzen (1736 –1786), the voivode of Mstsislaw,is groundbreaking in many respects. First and foremost, it stands as the firstcomprehensive study of a figure from the noble elite of the eighteenth-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, particularly from a group rooted in the former PolishLivonia (Livonian Voivodeship), largely composed of families with German originsand, until the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, often adherents of theLutheran faith. The study is based on meticulous archival and library research, whichalso extends to Belarusian and Ukrainian collections – resources now nearly inac-cessible to Polish scholars. Wróbel employs a diverse range of sources, including anextensive body of correspondence and two diaries left by Hylzen, one of which re-mains in manuscript form. While the study presents numerous undeniable strengths, certain aspects would benefit from further revision and supplementation. The presenttext collects the observations and questions that arose during a careful review of thework. Particular attention is given to Hylzen’s health, a significant factor in light of theimpending extinction of the Polish-Livonian Hylzen family line, which concluded in1800.
