Summary/Abstract: In XVII century, regular population censuses in European countries were not yet a practice, and because of this, the work of Francesco Sansovino, via merits of his editor, don Giustiniano Martinioni, gains significance. Information brought by Venetia Città Nobilissima reveal Venice as an urban area, but this did not refer equally to all the city parts. At the same time, index of city quarters (sestieri), on which Francesco Sansovino’s work is based, conceptually matches the work of Marino Sanudo, one century older, and because of this, development or decline of each particular part can be followed, from the perspective of conditions from around 1660, the period from which don Martinioni “additions” originate. On the other hand, if we compare them with other sources about population of Venice, we can conclude that, despite series of epidemics that hit the city, its population in XVII century shows a certain progression, which still cannot be classified as a demographic boom.
