Summary/Abstract: The paper offers a comprehensive account and analysis of all the available literary and documentary sources on the office of neokoroi in the Greek world from the Classical to the Late Roman period. While some literary sources, especially Late Roman and Byzantine ones, give ambivalent and conflicting definitions of the essence of their duties and obligations, more trustworthy evidence found in numerous Greek inscriptions permits us to grasp just how important they were for the smooth functioning of all major and minor sanctuaries throughout the Greek world. An integral part of the study is a discussion on the place of zakoroi in the Greek cult.
