Summary/Abstract: Language is a means of access to experience and together with memory, constitutes instruments for the institutionalization of collective experience. In the same way, writing and script represent an important component of a people’s tradition and cultural heritage, which can, but it doesn’t have to, influence the definition of their identity. In this way identities, both individual and collective, are the result of the internalization of cultural guidelines by social actors, which take place within certain fields of activity, institutional frameworks and discursive formations and practices. In the case of the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, due to the coexistence of various peoples within one territorial space and the presence of different religious groups, their language was recorded in different scripts throughout history. Likewise, the characterization of each of these scripts as belonging to the Croatian cultural heritage has varied over time. Through a sociological and cultural approach, which must also be historical, the results of the research are presented, with the aim to determine the knowledge of the written tradition of Croatian high school students in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to see to what extent it affects the determination of their identity.
