Summary/Abstract: There is a close connection between social status and well-being that objective socio-demographic indicators cannot fully explain. The present study aims to analyze the role of the subjective dimensions of status anxiety and status consciousness (status display, status rejection, respect for hierarchy, belief in hierarchy) in relation to psychological well-being. The sample consists of 490 participants (aged 16-75 years). The results suggested that status anxiety is the strongest predictor of psychological well-being and its dimensions. Status display predicted changes in positive relations with others, autonomy, personal growth, and self-acceptance. Status rejection was related to overall psychological well-being, autonomy, and self-acceptance. Respect for hierarchy predicted changes in purpose in life and autonomy, while belief in hierarchy predicted overall psychological well-being, purpose in life, and environmental mastery. These relationships persisted after controlling for the effects of age, income, education, and occupational level. The subjective components of social status enhance the theoretical model of the eudaemonic tradition by increasing the explained variance beyond objective status indicators such as age, income, education, and occupation.
