Summary/Abstract: This article presents the biography of Mr. Paul Păltănea, considered the greatest historian of the city of Galați. A tireless researcher, museographer, librarian, academic, and above all, historian. He wrote numerous articles and some remarkable works on the local history of Galați, its surroundings, and the personalities of these lands. His most prestigious work is "History of the city of Galaţi from its origins to 1918", for which he received the title of doctor in history. However, his merits were recognized only after the fall of the communist regime, because until then, his scientific activity was unfairly restricted by the communist authorities of Romania, due to his status as a former political prisoner.
