Summary/Abstract: The European Years Initiative offers a dynamic approach to enhancing higher education by incorporating contemporary societal themes into academic curricula, thereby making learning more relevant, impactful, and aligned with evolving societal priorities. Drawing on examples from recent European Years—including the Years of Skills, Youth, Creativity and Innovation, and Languages—the study explores ways for educators to align these themes with teaching strategies, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches, thematic content, and experiential learning activities. This kind of thematic integration in educational practices not only enhances academic engagement but also cultivates critical thinking, civic responsibility, and real-world competencies in students. Although such an approach faces challenges such as institutional resistance to change, curriculum adaptation, and the need to balance discipline-specific with broader thematic content, the student survey we conducted revealed its importance. Namely, the survey data uncovered both a knowledge gap about the European Union and a strong desire to understand its relevance to their lives. Ultimately, we argue that integrating European Year themes in teaching, that is linking education to societal challenges, can increase student motivation, enhance learning outcomes, and better equip students to navigate complex, interconnected global challenges.
