Summary/Abstract: Innovations represent many benefits within, including those for enterprises and whole national economy as well. Especially small and medium sized enterprises have the possibility to use and effectively utilize innovations through their implementation and in such way to be more competitive even in comparison to bigger companies. But no matter of the company size, innovations can be considered as a key towards better products, higher quality of production and processes, more effective enterpreneuring. This article describes innovative environment in Slovakia through main problems in macroeconomic development and public administration which limit basic strategy which was adopted towards 2013. Article focuses on four special assumptions which are needed for further innovations development from national point of view and analyzes problems which Slovak companies may face to. Finally it identifies some key features from planned innovative strategy which should be changed because of different starting position at the beginning of planning process.
