Summary/Abstract: Romania’s policy of distancing itself from the Soviet Union, launched at the beginning of the 60s, received a moment of international recognition with the Czechoslovakian crisis in 1968. By condemning the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia by Nicolae Ceaușescu on August 21, Romania was recognized by The West, the status of „autonomous state” within the communist bloc. The skilful game played by Ceaușescu in the context of the Cold War, brought many benefits to Romania, especially in the external sphere.
