Summary/Abstract: In the world of literature, Endo Shusaku represents one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century. His works encompass various themes: suffering of the human race, cultural differences between the West and the East, moral dilemmas and weaknesses of individuals, etc. Being Catholic and Japanese, he used an Eastern narrative form (kishotenketsu) to bring Christianity closer to the Japanese. That narrative form implies the Buddhist teaching of dukkha – life’s constant inconveniences. The paper analyzes Endo’s understanding of the theme of suffering in the context of cultural differences between Japan and the West, as well as the kishotenketsu narrative form. The aim of the work is to show how Endo, using the Buddhist culture from which he originated, tried to bring Christianity closer to the Japanese and how successful he was in doing so. The author points out two images of Christ through which Endo carried out the inculturation of Christianity in Japan and evaluates their success.
