The contribution of the Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War to dissemination of the Katyń Crime-related knowledge

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to remind of the role which the Central Museum ofPrisoners-of-War played in conducting research into the vicissitudes of Polishofficers and soldiers who were detained by the Soviets after the USSR aggression on Poland on 17 September 1939 as well as to show various forms of Museum’sactivity towards popularization of the knowledge on the murder committed on themin the spring of 1940, which is connected with the notion of the Katyń Crime. Theauthor discusses successive historical premises which enabled to make a historicshift in revealing the truth about the Katyń Crime at the turn of the 20th and the21st century, including the circumstances and premises behind the official decisionto extend by the Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War its statutory activity withmatters pertaining to Katyń in the early 1990s. Accordingly, the article lists themost representative forms of the Museum’s activity in the sphere of disseminationof the knowledge on the Katyń Crime (research works, organization of conferen-ces, scientific sessions and symposia, participation of workers of the Museum inconferences and scientific events held in Poland and abroad, including publicationsof their contributions, editorial activity, organization and presentation of perma-nent and temporary exhibitions, other forms of work of the Museum in the fieldof popularization of the knowledge on the Katyń Crime). The article is concludedwith an extensive summary.
