Summary/Abstract: Coaching is a dynamic and evolving field with a diverse range of approaches and practices. Due to its open nature, there are no restrictions on those who wish to practice coaching. They may come from different fields of activity, possess a variety of qualifications and may or may not have been through more extensive or very short programs, with or without assessment and certification. However, engaging in a coaching process presents practitioners with a specific set of dilemmas and challenges. Main approaches are discussed in relation to their corresponding psychological traditions and schools, choices of emphases in their goals and dilemmas related to the degree of directiveness, general or narrow goals, deep or surface intervention, structured or loose approach, working with the unconscious or conscious, focus on feelings or on thinking, acceptance and security versus confrontation and challenges, positive thinking versus working with negative beliefs, orientation to the future, past or present, defining problems or focusing on solutions, etc. Dealing with these dilemmas requires practitioners first of all to understand them, and then to commit to continuous development of their professional knowledge, skills and abilities to make ethical decisions. The importance of creating a specific model of coaching practice is emphasized to help clarify the values, goals, and appropriate tools and techniques used in the coaching process, as well as researching it for improvement.
