Summary/Abstract: The Târgu-Jiu camp was set up in September 1939, as a temporary encampment for soldiers in the Polish army. On February 15, 1941, it became a “political internment camp”. On June 28, 1941, the Antonescu government interned here Jews that had been evacuated from the north of Moldova, with the subsequent exception of minor children and women. Along with the Jews, five more categories of political prisoners were interned in the camp: Iron Guard members, communists, mobilization suspects, saboteurs and spies. In 1944, the Hunedoara Legion of Gendarmes began the activity of arresting Hungarian and German subjects of German ethnic origin, including Austrians, from the territory of the county and sending them for internment in the Târgu-Jiu Camp. At the level of the entire country, as well as of Hunedoara County, there was a rather weak activity of the military authorities, which managed to send only 6,452 people to the Târgu-Jiu Camp, out of whom 3152 were Hungarians, 1144 were exempt from internment, and 2146 were missing.
