Summary/Abstract: The work represents a true fresco of Byzantine life near Constantinople, with ordinary people: monks, workers, warriors, innkeepers. Although small facts with interesting details about how they ate and dressed, about daily occupations, are presented, these are intertwined with state politics, about pilgrimages to Rome or to the altar in Vlaherne or Hones, in Phrygia. The Romanian edition of the work of the venerable Nicolae Kataskepenos enriches our philokalic literature, as Saint Cyril the Philotheos, entrusting his life for three years to some sailors, will spend a period on the banks of the Danube, on the current territory of our country, which will lead him to dedicate his life to serving God and his neighbor. This biography also provides us with information about the author, the venerable Nicolae Kataskepenos, who was very little known until now. Through style, conciseness, clarity, and sincerity, with scriptural paraphrases and from the Holy Fathers, we can consider him among the best Byzantine hagiographers of the 12th century.
