Summary/Abstract: he present reflection aims to highlight the need for both an intelligent (rational) and faithful approach to the Bible text. Using as an example the parable of the sower, told by three evangelists, also called synoptics (Matthew 13:1,23; Mark 4:1–20 and Luke 8:4–15), it can be seen how the message of Scripture needs above all to be heard (or read) in its literality; but this alone is not enough. The fact that the disciples ask Jesus to explain the meaning of the parable, i.e. to unveil the envelope that constitutes the parabolic mode of expression, and that Jesus does so with patience and remarkable pedagogy, indicates either that Jesus himself not only accepts, but even demands the effort of the disciples’ intelligence to understand the message. It can be noted in the parable that if the message is not understood, the chance of bearing fruit is totally nullified. Then the different levels of understanding also lead to different ways of penetrating the message and, above all, to fruitfulness, to faith.
