Summary/Abstract: The paper turns on the period when Dobroslav Orel worked as a teacher in church institutions and Austrian secondary schools (1894-1918). It focuses on the least studied part of his activity, choirmastering. Through the prism of contemporary pedagogical journals and school documentation, he attempts to reconstruct the choirmaster's methods used by him and, in particular, traces the dynamics of the development of his relationship with Battke's intonation method, from his initial enthusiasm to his awareness of the pitfalls of uncritical acceptance of this method to his warning against the danger of elevating the means of achieving correct intonation to the goal of singing education.
