Summary/Abstract: The subject addressed is of increased interest for international humanitarian law in the context of contemporary armed conflicts, given that the 'law of war' has evolved from the perspective that direct participants are the regular forces of the belligerent states, as explicitly stated in the provisions of the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 and the Geneva Conventions of 1949.
