Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to delve into the complexity of the concept of reading comprehension and the scholarly investigation into its presence in the Polish education system. Historical and current curricular foundations have been analyzed to illustrate the pedagogical perspective on reading comprehension in Polish schools and its transformations over time. The analysis of examination sheets at various levels of education (primary school [szkoła podstawowa], middle school [gimnazjum], upper secondary school [liceum] – post-middle [szkoła ponadgimnazjalna] and post-primary school [szkoła ponadpodstawowa]) documents the practical direction of assessing the described skill. The examination of the specified materials reveals a discrepancy between the scientific knowledge of reading comprehension, the structure of program documents, and the format of exams in different types of schools.
