Summary/Abstract: Self-esteem is a widely discussed concept encompassing much more than our subjective perception of ourselves. The factors influencing self-esteem, its forma- tion, and its stability reveal its complexity. To delve into self-esteem, this paper first defines what self-esteem is and how psychologists have described it over the years. It explains the functions of self-esteem, how it is shaped, and its va- rious types, aiding in a deeper understanding of this concept. In the context of male-female relationships, self-esteem is analyzed in terms of gender differences and changes within romantic partnerships. Numerous studies indicate a rela- tionship between one’s own appearance and the level of self-esteem, raising the question of whether a partner’s appearance also has a statistical significance in relation to women’s self-esteem. To investigate the level of self-esteem among women in relationships and its correlation with the assessment of a partner’s physical appearance, this study utilized a custom survey and the Rosenberg Self- Esteem Scale. Additionally, self-esteem and factors related to attractiveness and relationships were analyzed for potential interdependence. A hypothesis was posed that higher self-esteem in women correlates with higher ratings of their partner’s appearance. A total of 224 women in relationships were surveyed. Ho- wever, the results did not confirm this hypothesis, indicating that regardless of the level of self-esteem, women equally positively evaluate the attractiveness of their partners.
