Summary/Abstract: There is a lack of consensus on the qualities possessed by the ideal doctor and very limited research on these qualities among medical students. Aim: To investigate whether diff erences in personality traits, emotional intelligence and empathy exist between medical and dental students. We hypothesised that there were no diff erences in the study groups in relation to the variables studied. Methods: The study used the NEO-FFI personality questionnaire, the INTE emotional intelligence questionnaire and the IVE inventory, with which the level of empathy was measured. The study was completed by 100 students, 50 each from the medical course and 50 from the medical-dental course. Results: There were no diff erences between the study groups of students in the levels of empathy and emotional intelligence. The only characteristic that diff erentiated the students studied was conscientiousness, which was higher in the group of medical-dental students. The ability to build positive interpersonal relationships has clear implications for the professional development of future doctors. Conducting research in this area can enhance the counselling, regarding the career of medical students.
