Summary/Abstract: „The Great Canon”, the work of St. Andrew of Crete, is one of the best known and most frequently used creations in the entire Orthodox hymnography. A veritable treasure of both theology and poetry, this Canon is read/sung in churches and monasteries on the days that the Church has set very precisely: the first four evenings of Great Lent and the evening of the Wednesday of the fifth week. Being very loved by monks, priests and believers, the Canon of St. Andrew, Bishop of Crete (740) arouses interest and, for this reason benefits, in the Romanian language, from a beautiful translation, found in the book of worship entitled „Triodion”, and several studies, especially historical, accompanied by explanations, nuances, comments. The present study is based on a chapter of the author's dissertation, defended in 2000 at the Faculty of Theology „Justinian Patriarch” in Bucharest, the version published here being bibliographically updated and significantly enriched analytically. The motivation for publishing this study is the 25th anniversary of the completion of an important theological-artistic project: the audio recording of this Canon, in which the author (then archdeacon at the Galați Cathedral) participated as soloist. This recording, made in the Radio Galați studio, together with tenor archdeacon Florin Bobei and Doru Feraru and the choir of the „Saint Andrew” Theological Seminary from Galați, conducted by Nicu Jugănaru, has been circulating, since 1999 and until now, on CD or audio cassette and is known at national and European level especially through the promotion made by Radio Trinitas of the Romanian Patriarchate.
