Summary/Abstract: In this article, the authors reveals the concept and main functions of court costs in civil proceedings. Performing compensatory (restorative) and preventive (preventive) functions, the institution of court costs ensures a balance of interests of the individual, society and the state. A generalization of the practice of application by the courts of the provisions of the law, the subject of which is court costs in civil cases, showed that the courts do not always comply with the legal provisions on court costs, which requires the necessary optimization and improvement measures.
