ION COSTINESCU ‒ CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROMANIAN NATIONAL CULTURE

Summary/Abstract: Vocabularyu romano-francesu, developed by Ion Costinescu, appeared in 1870 in Bucharest, after a long period of hardship and attempts encountered by the editor on the process of printing his work. Wanting to offer the Romanian people a lexicographic work far from perfection, but one that would respond, first of all, to the practical needs of the speakers, Costinescu drew up a dictionary that captures, not only at the level of the vast linguistic material, but also from the perspective of drawing up own criteria for the composition of the dictionary (obviously, under the influence of large international lexicographic works). In this case, based on the vocabulary analysis, it can be discussed about the establishment and observance by the author of some conventions and norms that take into account the manner of elaboration of the dictionary. His endeavor in creating a monolingual lexicographic work of such proportions and his persistence in observing, with small inconsistencies, the technical rules of organization (of the macrostructure and microstructure of the dictionary), in the pre-modern period of the Romanian lexicography, it deserves to be viewed with admiration and gratitude, all the more so as, a standardization can only be addressed towards the end of the nineteenth century, through the intervention and involvement of the Romanian Academy.
