Strengthening the independence of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany from political influence.Proposals for amendments to the Basic Law of Germany

Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of 2024, it was announced that the political parties of Germany‘s ruling coalition and the opposition parties of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union had started negotiations to strengthen the independence of the Federal Constitutional Court. On 23.07.2024 the Federal Ministry of Justice announced that an agreement had been reached between the parties involved in the negotiations on the most important issues on which amendments to the Basic Law of Germany should be adopted in order to protect the Federal Constitutional Court from political influence.
