The Social Relational Space in the Process of Desistance from Crime: The Case of Motocross Communities

Summary/Abstract: Desistance from crime has become an increasingly prominent topicamong Polish researchers in the field of rehabilitative pedagogy.These scholars seek to understand how individuals disengage fromcrime and what factors support this process.The main purpose of this article is to show the importance of socialbonds and interpersonal relationships in the process of desistancefrom crime, using the functioning of motocross associations as a casestudy. The analysis is based on research conducted through ethno-graphic methods, including interviews and participant observation.The study group consisted of members of motocross communities withcriminal backgrounds. The issues discussed in this article have notbeen widely discussed in the context of either theoretical or practi-cal rehabilitative pedagogy. Moreover, the conclusions drawn from this research, particularly their application to practice, could offer analternative to the ineffective methods currently used with individualsleaving correctional facilities.The research findings presented in this article are part of a larger pro-ject carried out in preparation for a doctoral dissertation titled Desist-ance from Crime Among Individuals Involved in Motocross. The data col-lected suggests that former offenders emphasize the need for supportin building relationships within their communities, which in turn strength-ens their efforts to desist from crime and facilitates their successful re-integration into society.
