Summary/Abstract: The parable of the Prodigal Son, also known asthe ‟Parable of the Merciful Father”, speaks of the feastthe Father prepares to celebrate the return of his son, considered dead and lost, and later resurrected andfound. Placed alongside two other shorter parables – ofthe lost sheep (Lk 15: 3-7) and of the lost drachma (Lk 15:8-10) –, this parable emphasizes a definite choice of Godor His preference for the poor and sinners, with whom He gladly entertains himself, sitting at the table withthem and eating with them, and is introduced into thelucanic story by a significant verse: ‟And all thepublicans and sinners drew near to Him, that they mighthear Him” (Lk 1: 1). This parable represents God'sattitude toward all of His children: the just and thesinners. The present study presents a brief exegesis of theparable of the Prodigal Son and, especially, some of thepsychological implications that transpire in it.
