Summary/Abstract: The roles given on man and woman of society effect on selection of their contraceptive methods. This choice reveals gender difference in society. Contraceptive methods are shaped with not only knowledge but also certain sociocultural existence as well as gender. The purpose of our study is to examine the sociocultural structure underlying informed choice -or not- of contraceptive methods. Vasectomy, also known as male sterilization, simply means giving up the ability to have children. In the study, the rate of this procedure with female sterilization and the rates of male sterilization in Turkey and USA were compared. Also, the cultural background of why Turkey does not prefer this method has been examined; it has been pointed out that different cultures create different gender roles. As the method of working, the database of Center for Disease Control (CDC), which is the most effective statistical center of pregnancy and birth of the United States, and the Turkish Population and Health Survey 2010 Main Catalog prepared by Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies in Turkey are analyzed. In general, the concepts of gender and masculinity, virility and hegemonic masculinity have been explained through De Beauvoir, Cornell and Butler's feminist theories and tried to reveal the perception of masculinity in Turkey.
