Saints Cyril and Methodius as forerunners of the European Union (?)

Summary/Abstract: For centuries, the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who are the patron saints of Europe, have reminded not only Christians but all theinhabitants of this continent of the continent's continuing need to build European unity. By going back to Europe's roots, we can gaina better understanding of its past and of its identity, so that we can be fully committed to the realisation of human rights, step up our effortsin solidarity with the peoples of other continents and, in so doing, work towards peace and development on a global scale. It can thereforebe thought that both Saints made a fundamental contribution to the creation of Europe and its formation not only in religious terms, butmoreover as a state and cultural organism. The founders of the European Union propounded views that were innovative and ahead of theirtime. At the same time, they did not forget that at the heart of the European integration tendencies of the peoples inhabiting this part of theworld lay both a common history, tradition, culture and identity, but above all Christian values. Although they represented differentbackgrounds, they were guided by the fundamental objective of uniting Europe, thus striving to ensure lasting peace and economic, politicaland social stability. Bearing in mind the fundamental goals and values which guided the founding fathers of the European Union and whichcontinue to guide the organisation, it should be emphasised that they coincide with those expressed by the Solemn Brothers. Hence, theauthor of this article attempts to answer the question whether Sts Cyril and Methodius can be forerunners of the European Union.An approximation of the brothers' mission in the Slavic territories, as well as a brief overview of the history of this European organisation,allows the conclusion to be drawn that both are the first founding fathers of the union as nations inhabiting the Old Continent. They broughtthe foundations of the Slav faith and culture, their indissoluble unity. But it should be remembered that they were, and still are, heralds ofthe Gospel, witnesses of the Good News proclaiming the God who constantly loves every human being. It is not insignificant that in theiconography the saints are depicted in pontifical dress as Greek or Latin bishops, which also shows the integrity of Europe, as both Easternand Western parts of this continent.Bracia Cyryl i Metody, którzy patronują Europie, od wieków przypominają nie tylko chrześcijanom, lecz wszystkim mieszkańcom tegokontynentu o nieustannej potrzebie budowania jedności europejskiej. Sięgając do korzeni Europy możemy jeszcze lepiej zrozumieć jejprzeszłość oraz tożsamość, by móc w pełni angażować się w realizację praw człowieka, zintensyfikować działania na rzecz solidarnościz narodami innych kontynentów oraz dążyć przy tym do prac na rzecz budowania pokoju i rozwoju na skalę światową. Można zatemsądzić, że obaj Święci wnieśli zasadniczy udział w tworzeniu Europy oraz jej kształtowaniu nie tylko w wymiarze religijnym, co więcejjako organizmu państwowego i kulturowego. Twórcy Unii Europejskiej głosili poglądy, które były nowatorskie, wyprzedzające ich czasy.Nie zapominali przy tym, że u podstaw europejskich tendencji integracyjnych narodów zamieszkujących tę część świata leży zarównowspólna historia, tradycja, kultura i tożsamość, ale nade wszystko wartości chrześcijańskie. Choć reprezentowali różne środowiska,przyświecał im fundamentalny cel, jakim było zjednoczenie Europy, dążąc tym samym do zapewnienia trwałego pokoju oraz stabilnościgospodarczej, politycznej i społecznej. Mając na uwadze podstawowe cele i wartości, które przyświecały ojcom założycielom UniiEuropejskiej i które nadal przyświecają tej organizacji, należy podkreślić, że są one zbieżne z tymi, które wyrażali bracia sołuńscy. Stądteż autorka artykułu podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy św. Cyryl i Metody mogą być prekursorami Unii Europejskiej.Przybliżenie misji braci na terenach zamieszkujących przez Słowian, a także krótkie omówienia historii tej europejskiej organizacjipozwala wysnuć wniosek, że obaj są pierwszymi ojcami założycielami unii, jako narodów zamieszkujących Stary Kontynent. Wnieślipodstawy wiary i kultury słowiańskiej, ich nierozerwalną jedność. Ale należy pamiętać, że byli i są nadal zwiastunami Ewangelii,świadkami Dobrej Nowiny głoszącymi Boga, który nieustannie miłuje każdego człowieka. Nie bez znaczenia pozostaje fakt, żew ikonografii święci są przedstawiani w stroju pontyfikalnym jako biskupi greccy lub łacińscy, co również ukazuje integralność Europy,jako jej zarówno Wschodniej i Zachodniej części tego kontynentu.
