EU Legislative Framework for Rare Diseases

Summary/Abstract: In recent decades, the EU has faced a number of serious challenges that put at risk the inalienable health rights of citizens and health security in Europe. Along with the aging of the population, the growing estimate of chronic diseases, serious cross-border health threats, rare diseases are among these challenges. The specific features of this group of diseases lead to significant difficulties in realizing the health rights of patients who suffer from them. Today, the EU and the member states realize that overcoming the problems in the field of rare diseases is possible only by applying a complex approach, including close cooperation between all interested legal entities.
