Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the military, political, social and economic dimensions of the Republic of Korea’s participation in the Vietnam War. The diversion of troops to the Republic of Vietnam was a manifestation of the restoration of the state’s subjective position in the international space, as well as a demonstration of the importance of allied ties with the United States. The military effort abroad was effectively linked to the ongoing modernisation programmes at home, including those aimed at building the defence industry. Participation in the Vietnam War was thus one of the important factors shaping the modern Republic of Korea.
