Summary/Abstract: The implementation of Germany's monetary policy in the annexed territories consisted of replacing the Polish złoty with the German mark, which was the only means of payment. In the case of the General Government, the Bank of Poland's notes - Polish złoty - were replaced in 1940 with notes issued by the occupational Bank of Issue in Poland, popularly called Kraków złoty. In the territories annexed to the Third Reich, all Polish credit and savings institutions were subject to confiscation and commissioner management by the Haupttreuhandstelle Ost in Berlin (Main Trust Office East). Liquidation work concerned both assets and liabilities. The Germans, aware of the central role of credit institutions in economic life, began actions at the beginning of the occupation to revive and rationalize the Polish credit apparatus in the General Government. This task was entrusted to the Banking Supervision Office. His efforts were primarily aimed at influencing credit institutions so that they would best serve the German war economy.
