It contains 14 stand-alone articles, bound both chronologically and through general problematics, dedicated both to established figures in the history of the Eastern ecclesiastical musical tradition and to lesser-known figures of it – St. John of Damascus, St. Cyril and St. Methodius, St. Clement of Ohrid, St. John Koukouzeles, metropolitan Theoleptos of Philadelphia, Vladislav the Grammarian, protopsaltes Evstatie of Putna, hieromonks Kosma the Macedonian and Gavriil the Macedonian, metropolitan Serafim of Bosnia and hieromonk Dionisij of Veles, hieromonk Joasaph of Rila, Dobri Hristov, Petar Dinev. Through the series of personalities, the author builds a general idea of the historical development of the music of the Christian East, analyses important thematic areas in the study of this music, and enriches the stages in this development with new facts and sources. The edition also lays out principles determining the affiliation of certain musical monuments and musicians to Bulgarian liturgical music; it outlines its development from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.
