Summary/Abstract: Kristina Yapova’s book follows the teaching of phenomenology and has been structured in two parts: “Quid sit musicus?” and “Musical Reason”. Part One, as seen with the lens of the concept of musicus, intersects (all the way through Plato, Aristoxenus, Boethius, Guido d’Arezzo, and the music dictionaries of later centuries) the path of the idea that music is the highest form of philosophy. It also traces the great change from Boethius’ understanding of the difference between the knower and the singer up to Guido d’Arezzo’s conviction that the singer must also be knowing. Thus, through the historical concept of musicus, the philosophical concept of musical reason is entered into (Part Two). Musical reason as a modus of reason obeys its own law, namely the law of the tone, and so it achieves “the truth (of Being), the meaning (of existence), and the love (towards wisdom)”. From this position, connections with the rational-discoursive reason are also being explored, in which the scientific discourse on music is included as well. The edition also contains an abridged version in English translated by Mihail Lukanov.
