Summary/Abstract: In an attempt to answer the question from the title, the author mentions the habit of considering the most famous Croatian long poem from the 19th century an epic. After that he analyses the plot, the characters, and the composition of the work, mustering arguments for his claim that The Death of Smail-Aga can hardly be called an epic poem. He compares Mažuranić's master-piece with Dimitrije Demeter's Grobničko polje and, after finding numerous similarities, expands the comparison to numerous similar poetic works in Southern Slavonic literatures and elsewhere. He reaches the conclusion that The Death of Smail-Aga belongs to the group of romantic rhymed narratives. For some time this type of poetry acted as a sub-genre, and in some Slavic literatures it obtained additional generic qualities. The author maintains the view that this type of poetry should have a generic name of its own.
