Summary/Abstract: Speciesism, understood as “the bias or biased favoring of members of one’s own species at the expense of others,” is a widely discussed phenomenon, considered in the field of philosophy. This type of prejudice is rooted by the cognitive processes that shape people’s thinking about themselves and other animals. Over the years, social beliefs have found their support in scientific considerations. Currently, the claim of human uniqueness in the discussion of cognitive processes is not as widely supported as it used to be. The aim of this article is to identify the manifestations of this phenomenon in the history of research on the theory of mind in non-human animals and, more importantly, to identify cognitive biases that contribute to the adoption of careless and, as we will see in later chapters, often false interpretations of empirical research.
