Summary/Abstract: Remote air traffic control towers make it possible to control air traffic at a given airport from another place, even several hundred kilometers away – using advanced digital means of image and sound transmission. Videoconferencing systems are an important technology used in the remote operation of the air traffi c control tower. The interest in remote tower operations is growing, due to the expected effi ciency, both in terms of cost and execution of operations, as well as environmental protection. The aim of the article is to present the concept of remote operation of the air traffi c control tower. The research process included the identifi cation of factors that may have an impact on the reduction of aviation personnel in the implementation of aircraft traffi c supervision via remote towers. SWOT analysis as a research method in safety sciences was used to determine the benefi ts, challenges and threats related to the remote supervision of air operations. The authors referred to published materials and specifi c applications at airports. The fi nal conclusions emphasized the legitimacy of the development of the concept of remote towers as well as the need to undertake further research in this area.
