Summary/Abstract: During the past 50 years the list of editors of literary history and criticism for the philological monthly Keel ja Kirjandus has grown to include 13 persons. A summary of their qualifications, contribution and editing principles is presented. A closer look is given to the first dozen years of publication, which were responsible for the development of an academically self-conscious author- and readership, the main subjects, thematic profile, genres and sections. The role of the longstanding (1958–1983) chief editor Olev Jõgi in that fundamental process of development is analysed. The second half of the contribution represents an interview with Elvi Pillesaar, an editor of literary and folklore studies, who tells about the strategies of the journal in the 1960s and 1970s, the working habits of the editorial board, the atmosphere, and the etiquette to be followed and tactical measures to be taken in the case of intervention by the Soviet organs. A couple of memorable contacts with contributors, such as Yuri Lotman and Vytautas Kubilius are described.
