Summary/Abstract: The article starts from a question that Augustine posed to his son: can one call oneself another’s teacher? This provocative question leads the interviewees to conclude that there is both an external and an internal teacher. The former merely inspires and stimulates the learning. The latter is the one who ultimately recognises as truth, goodness and beauty the content received by the student. Augustine’s thought goes beyond purely pedeutological issues and embraces the field of pedagogical anthropology. Hence, it is still relevant today. The second part of the article presents contemporary selected examples of the re-reading and adaptation of St Augustine’s thought in the context of current historical and social conditions.
