Claims Handling Expenses As An Integral Part Of The Analysis Of Property Insurance Results In Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: Since 2017, the Financial Supervision Commission in Bulgaria has started to publish more detailed information on the specific types of incurred expenses, including claims handling expenses. Due to that fact, the analysis of claims handling expenses for individual property insurances and the tracking of their development trend over the years become possible. At the same time, this analysis could be expanded by introducing two new ratios – "claims handling expenses/gross written premiums" and "claims handling expenses/claims paid". The first one gives an idea of the particularities of the specific property insurance product by showing the share of claims handling expenses in the price of the insurance service. The second ratio reveals the share of claims handling expenses compared to the claims paid. The results obtained from the above-mentioned indicators can help insurers in the analysis of property insurance products through the prism of the accompanying claims handling expenses.
