Summary/Abstract: In Elizabeth Costello by J.M. Coetzee the protagonist,in spite of being a popular writer, seems to bemisunderstood and unaccepted as a result of herstrict views on treating animals and eating meat.Her controversial opinions are supported withsuggestive arguments and intellectual considerationswhich impress not only the audience butalso Elizabeth’s son, who works at the universitythat hosts his mother. The arguments and comparisonsused by Costello in her lectures alwaysevoke interest of the audience. The variety ofrealms Elizabeth Costello applies in her speechesallows the readers to develop a multifaceted viewon the issue of eating meat and above all, thetreatment of animals. The aim of the article is todiscuss the views and the discourse of the protagonistof the novel which she applies to make animpact on the audience.
