Summary/Abstract: An attempt is made in the article to define settlement culture as a system for the functioning of folklore. The individual settlement is considered as the basic organizational unit which possesses definite spatial and temporal parameters. Settlement culture is distinguished by its own specific features which play the part of integrating and differentiating signs. It is a single system, the most stable unit for the functioning of folklore and it is at the same time a subsystem in the ethnoregional system. The folklore cycle is the organizer and regulator of the settlement system, securing the stability and repetability of artistic folk culture. The two axes in which the folklore cycle is realized are the annual culture circle and the socialisation of the personality as an element in the activity of the group.
