Summary/Abstract: Among the notable contributions to the study of the Ottoman Empire is the recent work by the American historian Marc David Baer, The Ottomans: Khans, Caesars, and Caliphs. The volume was published in Romanian in 2023 by Humanitas. The author aims to present a history of the state ruled by the Ottoman dynasty from a new perspective: that of a state of Muslim Europeans, organically integrated into a multi-religious Europe. Baer builds a picture of a linguistically and confessionally diverse empire. The long-term success of the empire was ensured by the promotion of the Ottoman spirit. This was a vision based on meritocracy, in which conversion to Islam played the role of the integrating factor. Special attention was paid to the disadvantaged groups in the empire: women, slaves, ethnic and confessional minorities. Nor are taboo subjects neglected, such as the culture of homosexual relations or the Armenian genocide.
