Summary/Abstract: When in the 19th century women began to show greater interest in physical activity than in previous cen turies, it was necessary to create or borrow the name of a woman practicing sports, or one passively inter ested in this field of activity. There are several synonyms in Polish: sportswoman/sportswomen, sportsmanka/ sportsmenka, sportswomanka/sportswomenka, sportówka, sportowczyni, sportowniczka. Although most names have a history of more than a hundred years, to this day, they raise doubts of correctness in users. The article discusses the functioning of these synonyms in both old and modern dictionaries of the Polish lan guage, in the theoretical linguistic studies and in the communication circuit based on texts contained in the POLONA library and to a lesser extent on the Internet in a diachronic and synchronic perspective.
