Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the architectural graphics in the plane between architectural representation and representation of architecture, focusing on the natural syncretism typical of the ancient civilizations and the medieval period. The study analyses the relation of artists and architects to architectural graphics. It will focus on the comparison: architecture as an artistic object, on the one hand, and its representation as an architect’s tool, on the other, with a stress on the research on the development of architectural graphics over time. The paper will consider selected examples, conditionally grouped according to their relation to the represented rchitectural objects as follows: Artistic: where architectural representations are the major tool used to get the artistic idea across. Decorative: where architectural representations fit in as significant part of the available architectural environment or are objects of applied arts: mosaics, frescoes, ceramic decorations, murals, relieves, etc; Background: where architectural representations outline the context of the major represented event; Specialized representation: intended for professional exchange of information. Normative blueprints are later taken aside. Research: these are architectural representations, where the target of research (either historical or constructive or optical or aesthetical or educational or plastic) is architectural environment; Individual representations will be explored using a semiotic approach. The significance of the paper lies in the field of architectural graphics.
